The Vision of Home – Umbala’s story
The core mission behind UMBALA’s story, is to create a “sense of home in a bottle.” This meant moving beyond just a beverage and creating a sensory experience that resonates with South African culture. It’s a tribute to the landscapes of KwaZulu-Natal, where the gin is handcrafted, blending the region’s natural botanicals with a deep respect for heritage.
The Meaning Of The Name
The name Umbala, which translates to “colour” or “hue” in Nguni languages such as isiZulu and isiXhosa, was chosen intentionally to reflect the brand’s identity and inspiration. It represents the vibrancy and diversity of South African culture, celebrating the richness of local traditions and communities. The name also reflects the vivid colours found in the botanicals used to craft the gin. The natural beauty of the landscapes of KwaZulu-Natal inspires the brand. Beyond its literal meaning, Umbala’s story is created through symbolising the richness, warmth, and character that a high-quality artisanal spirit brings to social gatherings, shared experiences, and moments of reflection. In this way, the name captures both the visual and emotional essence of the brand.

How Umbala’s story began
Nandipha Matyumza is the founder of UMBALA, a proudly South African craft gin born in KwaZulu-Natal. Driven by a deep love for the beauty of South Africa, its landscapes, its botanicals, and its living culture. Nandipha set out to create something that felt like home in every sip. What began as a personal passion for combining nature and isiZulu heritage grew into UMBALA: a gin that carries the colour, warmth, and spirit of the land it comes from. For Nandipha, making gin was never just about the drink, it was about creating a place where everyone belongs
